about melodie
Melodie is a technical copy and technical writer working in high-tech industries.
After working in the environmental field for several years (both as a wet bench chemist and and environmental consultant), she moved into technology transfer. She wrote for an award-winning newsletter, spoke at conferences on environmental applications of new technologies, and wrote several targeted reports on nanotechnology and environmental applications of new technologies. One writer told her after she left that at least all the other staff writers "now know how to spin an environmental story."
The biggest lesson she learned working in a journalistic environment is this: The editing begins with which stories are published and which ones aren't. The second biggest was that you often can't believe the marketing because the engineers weren't consulted! ;> So accuracy is quite important to her when constructing new pieces.
After leaving tech transfer she returned to IT and has been working in that field since. She is currently transistioning from technical writing to technical copywriting. She has been putting her professional newsletter background to use over the years and quite enjoys the compartively shorter pieces found in marketing. White papers, success stories, and website copy is a natural fit for her.
Melodie holds a BS in Biology (ecology concentration) and a minor in Chemistry from Old Dominion University. She's an active member of several writer's groups and also active in several LinkedIn groups. She has been a consultant in one form or another since 1981.
